Coal production growth picks up

US mine production surged in the four weeks ending May 20 from a year ago when the Powder River Basin was hit by May 14-15 derailments. The four-week period was down 1.1 pct week-to-week to 93.14 million tons but was up 11 pct from the 83.91 million tons mined during the same four weeks last year. That is up from single-digit growth posted in recent weeks. US mines have produced 458.17 million tons to date in 2006, up 4.1 pct ahead of last year.
