Coal markets flat again as volume remains elusive

Coal markets in the US continued to struggle to find new direction, with volume light as both buyers and sellers wait for the resolution of decisions on a number of largevolume, long-term solicitations currently in the market before moving on their own plans. Prices for coal from both Central and Northern Appalachia were broadly flat, with Pittsburgh Seam coal markets trending more heavily flat-down, especially for prompt deliveries. The summer is being closely watched in Appalachian coal markets as a determinant for future direction, as utilities ramp up generation to meet cooling demand they may again stress stockpiles, delivery systems and supply availability.
