Australia’s conservative coalition government today began the process to repeal the carbon tax and the mining resources rent tax (MRRT), in line with its election pledge. Prime minister Tony Abbot introduced the legislation to abolish the former Labor government’s carbon tax, stating that it should be the first economic reform of the current parliament. But he will struggle to get the bill through the Australian upper house of parliament until the new Senate is sworn in in July.
