BHP Billiton’s thermal coal production rises

UK-Australian resources firm BHP Billiton increased its thermal coal production by 6pc to 19.7mn t in January-March from 18.6mn t in October-December. The rise in production was driven by an improved performance from the firm’s South African and New South Wales (NSW) coal operations, which was partly offset by weaker demand for coal from the Navajo mine in New Mexico. BHP Billiton maintained its production guidance for the year to 30 June at 73mn t/yr, which leaves it with a modest output target of just 16.8mn t for April-June.
