PPL to install Brunner cooling towers

PPL will spend 125 million dollars to install cooling towers to control high-temperature discharges into the Susquehanna River at its 1,485MW Brunner Island generating station in York County, Pa., under a deal reached with state regulators. Brunner Island draws 795 million gallons/day of water from the Susquehanna, returning it warmer than the surrounding river flow. State regulators had provided a variance for the plant, saying the warmer water discharged still provided for balanced, indigenous aquatic ecosystem, but studies from 2002-2005 conducted by PPL showed an adverse impact on the river.
