USGS finds lower recoverable PRB coal reserves

In the first part of a nationwide study aimed at gauging recoverable domestic coal reserves, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has lowered recoverable coal estimates in one part of the Powder River Basin by almost 30pc. Federal geologists found 77 billion recoverable tons of lowsulfur sub-bituminous coal resources in the PRB's Gillette coal field in Wyoming, down 29.28pc from 2002 estimates of 109 billion tons, according to the USGS National Coal Resources Assessment released this week.
