The cost of sulfur dioxide scrubbing for units that have already been tackled has risen only marginally in recent years as manufacturers fine-tune control technology and develop new designs. This is balancing upward pressure from increasing raw material prices to a certain extent. But it is not clear whether advances in engineering will be able to keep up with increasingly more complex challenges as imminent tighter emission caps force utilities to address smaller, less cost-effective projects.
