It is debatable how far Vietnam has moved along the road to becoming a major shipbuilding nation. Before the economic climate deteriorated, the country was widely seen, along with India, as a rising star in shipbuilding. The country's output has not yet extended to sophisticated ships - handymax bulk carriers and general cargo ships predominate - but the orderbook covers a wide range of types, from small tugs through to a 316,000dwt VLCC.
