Call for subsidies as yard shutdowns spread

As more European shipyards face closure, the continent's builders have appealed for help in the form of targeted subsidies. Following a meeting with EU industry commissioner Giinter Verheugen and representatives of the marine equipment sector, the Community of European Shipyards'Associations (CESA) issued a statement requesting "active stimulus for demand in markets which are in need of new vessels, such as the replacement of ageing vessels in European waters".
