Security spreader success

A new security scanning system built into a container spreader has gained its first order and will be tested at a US port thisyear. US-based Lockheed Martin placed the order with Cargotec for its spreader-mounted radiation detection system.The Cargotec Port Security (CPS) system is designed to meet US requirements for 100 inbound container scanning by 2012. Lockheed Martin will use the spreader system to complete integration testing of the company's Container Scanning System. Mounted on a ship-to-shore crane spreader, the CPS technology will scan containers while the spreader is moving, which has the advantage of not slowing down terminal operations. Theequipment can be installed on crane spreaders, straddle carriers or other mobile equipment. The US Department of Homeland Security has awarded its Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) designation to the CPS, following a successful evaluation by the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
