Next-generation well intervention

In the past three to four years the concept of ship-shaped well intervention vessels has become well established in the offshore industry, because they provide a number of cost and operational advantages compared with using a rig for such work. A Norwegian-based venture, begun in 2007 between what is now Aker Solutions and DOF Subsea, is planning to take the concept to the next stage with the Subsea Equipment Support Vessel (SESV) and Subsea Well Service Vessel (SWSV). Existing examples of well intervention vessels, such as Island Offshore's Island Wellserver, currently use a technique known as light riserless well intervention, but the Aker/DOF Subsea venture is now building what is described as the next generation of well intervention vessels. This includes one capable of undertaking well intervention using a riser - as a rig would do - and thus significantly extending the range and scope of well intervention work that can be undertaken from a monohull.
