Columbus opens new world

Signifying the debut application of the inverted Ulstein X-Bow in the seismic market, the 89m WG Columbus has brought a new form to a part of the offshore services sector characterised by technological boldness and frontier operations. The four-ship programme led by the WG Columbus demonstrates Spanish build capabilities in an advanced vessel type more commonly associated with Norwegian shipyards. The series ordered from Hijos de J Barreras at Vigo will be deployed by WesternGeco, part of the Schlumberger Group, which took over the original contractual owner of the newbuilds, Dubai-based Eastern Echo, in 2008. The diesel-electric WG Columbus is equipped for 3D seismology worldwide, with the capability to deploy up to 12 streamers simultaneously. It encapsulates the SX124 design developed by Ulstein Verft's sister company Ulstein Design, originator of the Ulstein Bow. The bow solution promises less speed loss in head seas, resulting in lower fuel consumption, along with an improved working environment for the benefit both of seismic operations and crew habitability.
