Norway: Banking on foreign bottoms

Just 33 vessels are under construction or on order at present, and 19 of those are fishing vessels, small ferries or other miscellaneous craft. The remaining 14 vessels do not comprise the whole of Norway's commercial ship construction industry, however, because in the case of many ships the hull has been, or will be, built abroad and construction completed in Norway. This is not unusual in European shipbuilding and is an economic necessity for yards in countries with high labour costs.
