Despite the malaise affecting the world shipbuilding sector in general and the major contraction in German shipbuilding, there was no discernible air of despondency over Hamburg during the exhibition week. Even the discovery in the city of an unexploded bomb from the Second World War on the evening of the opening day, which meant that some visitors had to spend a night in emergency accommodation rather than their hotels, failed to dampen the almost tangible mood of optimism.
