Still a force to be reckoned with

Calculated in terms of both ship numbers and deadweight, South Korea has now been thoroughly eclipsed by its giant neighbour. In 2011, South Korean builders notched up a record number of ship deliveries for a single year, as the 575 ships handed over comfortably exceeded the 2010 total of 530 vessels. In deadweight terms the 2011 total of 54,685,397 tonnes was also well up on the 47,420,107 of a year previously. However, these statistics cannot match the corresponding Chinese figures of 1,494 ships and 67,916,889 tonnes. Nevertheless, South Korea's builders continue to win contracts for the sophisticated ship types that have become the country's/orte.
