Study looks at new alternative fuel

Spurred by tightening emissions legislation, a joint industry project has been launched in the Nordic region to investigate and test the use of methanol and dimethyl ether (DME) as potential marine fuels. Taking its name from the fuels being used, spirits (methanol) and ethers (DME), the SPIRETH initiative will include the modification of an engine to operate on methanol, and the demonstration of a methanol-based DME fuel system on a Swedish ro-pax ferry.
