Podded propulsion systems are generally considered to offer fuel savings over traditional rudder and propeller combinations, but it is also accepted that they are somewhat less robust. Nevertheless, the teething troubles that the systems experienced initially now appear to be mainly cured. Leading pod-maker ABB has continued to improve its offerings and has not neglected earlier versions that are in active service.
