A hybrid auxiliary electrical power system that combines a weather deck array of energy-harvesting solar panels with banks of lithium-ion batteries confers higher environmental credentials on the 60,154gt Emerald Ace than comparable pure car/truck carriers (PCTCs). As the last commercial vessel built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' (MHI) Kobe, Japan, shipyard, which is concentrating on submarine construction and potentially other highly specialised projects as part of a re-organisation and business re-orientation plan, the 6,400-car capacity vehicle carrier was completed at the end of June 2012. The renewable energy provisions in this addition to the fleet deployed by Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) are the outcome of a research and development study conducted by MOL and builder MHI with Japanese multinational electronics corporation Panasonic.
