As the first 1A ice-strengthened dry cargo carrier in its class, the 56,372dwt supramax bulker Arkadia was handed over in January 2012 to ESL Shipping, Finland's leading bulk cargo specialist. It was followed in May by sister ship Kumpula. Representing a combined value of around EUR60m, the bespoke pair had been contracted from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), which assigned construction to its associated joint venture company, Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard (HVS), at Ninh Hoa. The project has thereby added new dimension to Vietnam's shipbuilding portfolio as well as to ESL's capabilities in year-round Baltic transportation. The Arkadia generation constitutes a substantial advance in vessel size in the ESL fleet.
