Confusion leads to a collision

A deviation from protocol and from sensible safety management led to a collision between two vessels in a harbour entrance, according to a recent report. On 15 November 2012 the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) released its report into the collision between the ro-pax ferry Stena Fero-nia and the general cargo vessel Union Moon, at the entrance to Belfast harbour in 2012. At the time of the collision, just before 19.00 on 7 March 2012, Union Moon was outward bound, while Stena Feronia was entering the port - both vessels in close proximity to the fairway buoy at the outer limit of the harbour. While there were no injuries or pollution, both vessels incurred major structural damage as a result of the accident.
