Russia looks to Germany for Arctic salvage ships

Nordic Yards of Germany has won a newbuilding contract for a pair of icebreaking rescue and salvage vessels from Russia's transport ministry. Delivery of the ships is booked for 2Q/2015, with engineering and construction due to begin next year. Specified to the second-highest ice class, and thus for operations in Arctic waters, the new vessels will be used for patrols and rescue operation in offshore oil and gas fields in the region of Murmansk and in Sakhalin, the German yard said. They will have a length overall of 8 6m and a beam of 19m.
