Rio Tinto: US Q3 production off slightly

While Rio Tinto Energy America's US coal production dropped slightly in the third quarter, volume remains high compared with year-ago levels, reflecting continued recovery of rail capacity since 2005. The international mining giant produced 32.1 million metric tonnes (mt) of coal from its six US mines in the third quarter, a 1 pct decline from the second quarter and an 11 pct increase over the same period in 2005. Year-to-date, production is up 7 pct at 94.8 million mt, compared with 2005 production of 88.7 million mt.
