Future ferry's fuel mix

A bold concept of a totally emission-free ferry has been developed by the Ger-manischer Lloyd technical consultancy subsidiary FutureShip in co-operation with Baltic operator Scandlines. Fuel cell technology forms a central element of the solution proposed for a mould-breaking design of double-ended ferry suited to Scandlines' so-called Vogelfluglinie (or Fugleflugtslinien in Danish). The heavily trafficked service connects the German harbour of Puttgarden, on the island of Fehmarn, with Rodby, in Denmark, and the company's current double-enders depart from each terminal every 30 minutes, covering the 18.5km crossing in about 45 minutes.
