Japanese shipbuilding remains in state of flux

According to the latest IHS Fairplay data, Japanese shipbuilders completed around 18 of vessels delivered worldwide during 2012 in gross tonnage terms. Japanese production in this period saw a total of 5 7 5 vessels (of 100gt+), with an aggregate tonnage of almost 17.5M gt delivered. However, this output represents a reduction of 14 when compared to the peak production reached two years previously. Meanwhile, the Japanese share of the present newbuilding orderbook also appears to be in decline.
