Malaysia is expected to increase its annual thermal coal imports by more than 50pc by 2019 as the country brings additional coal-fired power generational capacity on line, according to state-run utility TNB. Demand for imported coal will grow by 13.5mn t or 57.6pc to 37mn t in 2019 compared with 2014, managing director Zainal Abidin Shah bin Mahamood said at the IHS coal conference in Cape Town, South Africa. Imports are expected to increase to 24.3mn t in 2015 and will accelerate further in 2016, reaching 26.6mn t.
