Reduced output at a Washington, DC-area coal-fired power plant while new pollution controls are installed could maintain power to the region during the summer peak, but would not allow for transmission line interruptions, a utility and grid operator have warned. PEPCO and PJM Interconnection told the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) that the Mirant-owned Potomac River power station must be able to jump to its full 482MW capacity at short notice to serve as a failsafe for two 230kV transmission lines serving the region.
