EIA: Coal use dipped in June, stocks climb

The US marked its first sequential May-to-June increase in generator inventories in June since 1985, as better deliveries of sub-bituminous coal and moderate temperatures in the eastern US cut coal demand in the month, EIA said today. Coal-fired generation and coal demand in June were each off from a year ago, with the coal-heavy Eastern fleet seeing significantly less demand in the month. Coal consumption dropped 3.2 pct, or nearly 3 million tons, from June a year ago. Net generation from coal was down 3.4 pct from a year ago, EIA reported in its Monthly Flash Estimates of Electric Power Data for June.
