Panama is gradually assuming a far more strategically vital position within container shipping lines' operational and management structures. While the presence of the Panama Canal means that the country has an important role to play in almost all the major lines' global strategies, it is perhaps the increased importance of the country's ports as regional transshipment hubs that is now acting as the primary magnet for those lines that are upgrading their operations there.
