These problems will occur in an acute outbreak of an ISV, but are even more important in recurrent or perpetual ISV infections - which are usually based on pigs in the 6-30kg weight range. In such continual infection, the most common bacteria to causefurther difficulties are: Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae or App; species of Pasteurella; My-coplasma; atrophic rhinitis, Salmonella; E. coli; Erysipelas; Staphylococcus hyicus and Streptococci. The situation may be complicated by multiple infections involving both the ISV and secondary agents. Together, they may lead to a new syndrome. Examples of this phenomenon are the post-weaning respiratory syndrome and the porcine respiratory disease complex, both of which have recently caused major economic losses in many countries.
