EIA report shows 2006 coal slowdown

Coal-fired generation contributed less to US power supplies in 2006 as natural gas-fired generation continued its dominance as the go-to resource for new builds, according to the Energy Information Administration's (EIA) "Electric Power Annual 2006" report released today. Coal-fired power production dropped 1.1pc last year from 2005 to 1.99 billion MWh, continuing its slow share decline from a peak of 52.8pc in 1997 to 49.0pc in 2006.
