EU import and export data confirmed a slowdown in wood pellet trade in the fourth quarter of 2014. Several of the region’s major markets recorded year-on-year falls in net imports for the quarter, limiting increases over the year as a whole to levels well below expectations. Total EU net imports were still up by 14pc year on year in the fourth quarter, at just over 1.4mn t, and full-year net imports were up by 13pc, at almost 5.5mn t. But those increases were dependent almost entirely on growth in the UK’s industrial market, which was unaffected by unusually high temperatures and the collapse in prices of competing fuels for heating.
