With spiralling newbuild prices, owners and operators appear even keener to order than before. Twelve months ago, the price for a South Korea-built post-panamax 6,500TEU containership was approximately USD80 million. Today, the same ship costs 15% more, at around USD92 million. A post-panamax ship of 8,500TEU could now cost up to between USD135 million and USD140 million. During February 2005, a massive 70 con-tainerships were contracted, producing a combined capacity exceeding 228,000TEU. This brings the total on order to over 1,100 ships, with a capacity of 4,297,000TEU, representing 69.45% of the current fully cellular fleet.
