dong poised for studstrup conversion

A conversion to wood pellet at Danish utility Dong Energy's coal-fired unit 3 at its 715MW Studstrup combined heat and power(CHP)plant in Aarhus will start in the summer and be completed by August 2016.“A heat agreement for the Studstrup plant has been settled,a final investment decision has been taken and construction work has already started,” Dong said.The conversion will consume 600,000-800,000 t/ yr of wood pellets. A bill passed by the Danish Parliament in June has re-solved a legislative issue that had postponed the conversion of the Studstrup power plant,Dong said.Before the new bill was passed,taxes were settled on a monthly basis which meant that heat and power production based on biomass was subject to taxes intended for fossil fuels,Dong said. “With the new legislation in place,central power stations can settle taxes on an hourly basis instead of a monthly basis and thus pay proper taxes on fuels for electricity and heat production.
