World fleet changes in March 2006

Containership orders in March were much stronger than usual, with a total of 58 ships contracted. Orders materialised for all ship sizes, from feeders to post-panamax vessels, but 31 handy-sized containerships dominated. As of April 1, the orders for fully cellular vessels stood at 1,100 ships, offering a total capacity of 4,096,000TEU. The majority of this tonnage is scheduled for delivery during the next two years. However, a few ships will only come out of the shipyards in 2010/11. Remarkably, the number of ships on order represents 49% of the operating fleet in service today.
