Sow numbers slip in asia's herds

Our surveys of Asia's 10 main pig-producing countries in 1984 and again in 1991 had pointed to a strong increase in their combined number of breeding sows. During those 7 years, it seemed, their sow population jumped by 18% from just over 27 million to nearly 32 million. Surveying the same countries after another 7-year interval has revealed an even greater expansion of herd inventories. In 1998, we believe, they shared a total of 39.4 million sows.
