Moving infections

It is wrong to assume that modern production methods always have resulted in healthier pigs, participants at the IPVS world pig health congress were told recently. More probably we have just exchanged one set of pathogens for other infections that thrive under the more segregated and controlled housing conditions of today's larger units. Those enterprises may see diseases such as atrophic rhinitis, pleuropneumonia and swine dysentery less regularly than in the past. But the door has opened to problems ranging from mycoplasmal pneumonia and PRRS to Streptococcus suis, the Haemophilus organism causing Glasser's disease and newcomers including the type-2 circovirus.
