Three-way tussle

Over the past few years, the port of Savannah (GA) has become a success story in the south-east of the US, in terms of container volumes and growth. Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) expects the port to maintain its leading position, ahead of its competitors Charleston (SC) and Jacksonville (FL), whose growth has been considerably less buoyant. But this situation looks set to change, with a narrowing of the gap between the three ports' throughputs forecast over the next five years. This is due to several major terminal and logistics developments under way at, or near, all three gateways, details of which are described below. In the case of Jacksonville, a major boost in volumes is expected by the end of this year.
