AI specialists in France have been describing their experiences of testing intrauterine insemination of sows at commercial herds. Some recent headlines in French producer journals have been telling a topical AI story. 'Deep insemination works well',said one. Another proclaimed that 'Deep insemination has solved the fertility problem". Both were referring to experiences in France with the still-novel inseminating technique that deposits boar semen beyond the cervix of a sow, up to the gateway of her uterine horns. The reports respectively in Pore Magazine and Renssir Pores gave special attention to remarks by personnel and customers of a regional pig AI service in northern France which operates 2 centres with a total of over 250 terminal-sire andpurebred boars. Agire-Pig supplied over 360 000 semen doses in 2002. One of the first organisations in the country to start field trials of intrauterine insemination, it began working with system developer IMV Technologies in mid-2001 to test results onabout 20 farms.
