Drainage under slats

Reporting a difference of opinion over the design of gutters below slatted floors, for the efficient removal of slurry. How to drain the manure channel under a slatted floor? A common drainage arrangement in one European country has been challenged recently. Its critics say it risks a build-up of solids, necessitating their removal by flushing with excessive amounts of water. Many German units over the years have installed this under-floor gutter design. Known locally as the Wechselstau or changeable traffic-jam system, it features an alternating flow principle as illustrated by the accompanying Figure 1. The basic idea is to empty the contents of a pair of channels every 14 days using alternate drainage points. To achieve that, the wall between these gutters has a gap at one end so slurry can flow around it in either direction. There is a drain on each side of the wall, fitted with a plug or stopper that can be lifted manually.
