Trends in US numbers

While new forecasts point to an expanding national herd and the number of units continues to decline, latest data for the US industry include an indication that 75 percent of the national pig inventory is now found in operations with at least 2000 pigs each. There is never any shortage of statistics about pork production in the USA. Most of them appear from the US department of agriculture or USDA, which has added to the dataset again recently by issuing its latest 'baseline' projections for the period to 2012. It forecasts a 1.7 percent downturn for the American output of pigmeat in 2003 before successive annual increases take the amount produced commercially from about 8.82 million metric tons this year to a 2012 level of approximately 9.64 million tons.
