Chinese bar and rod exports turned out to be over 550 kt more than wehad expected through May. MBR estimated that, given overall steel exportgrowth was being driven by non-bar and rod exports since March, Chinawould have likely exported around 2.94 Mt of bar and rod through May,but actual figures released this week show that Chinese exporters actuallymanaged to sell over 3.5 Mt through this period. This means that bar androd’s share of total steel exports surged back up to 38 through May, fromless than 31 in April, and the second highest proportion on record (afterNovember 2014, the peak of bar and rod volumes out of China).
