It is hard to put a positive spin on 2015, in what was the box port industry's most challenging year since the nadir of 2009, when world trade and global container shipments fell into decline. The 2016 edition of the Lloyd's List and Containerisation International Top 100 Container Ports supplement, ranking the world's largest box facilities on annual throughput terms, shows that their volumes braked sharply last year, rising just 1% to 545.6m teu on 2014. For the overwhelming majority of ports, 2015 will be a year they would rather forget.
