Biomass: Spot slips, curve under pressure

Wood pellet far curve contracts came under pressure in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region on Wednesday, as offer prices slipped and no new physical demand was recorded. Bearish sentiment prevailed amid further delays on sustainability requirements in the Netherlands — a prerequisite for utility co-firing, and continued uncertainty on future UK demand. Spot prices tumbled lower on the week, shedding $.53/t, to be recorded at $173.73/t — a fresh 15-month low. Selling pressure mounted on near-term dollar-denominated contracts with both European utilities and US producers looking to dispose of prompt volumes, with the latter split between either adjusting offer levels in line with sliding values or halting surplus production altogether. An offer around $175/t did not capture buying interest this week.
