Finnish utility Fortum’s wood chip-fred 130MW Vartan combined heat and power plant in Stockholm, Sweden, is fully operational. The plant has a consumption capacity of around 1mn t/yr of wood chips. Fortum expects to source 40pc from Sweden and Norway by rail and to import 60pc from other supply regions. The plant’s location gives it logistical fexibility “to ensure security of supply and access to the global market”, Fortum biomass trading chief Kjell Nilsson said at the Baltic Nordic Bioenergy conference in Vilnius, Lithuania, Tuesday. Wood chips can be delivered by rail or sea and the plant is able to receive deliveries from Panamax-sized vessels from other continents. Around 10pc of demand could be supplied by truck, Nilsson said.
