Canada to phase out traditional coal generation

Canada plans to eliminate most traditional coal-fi red generation over the next 14 years. The country’s minister of environment and climate change Catherine McKenna proposed regulatory changes on Monday under which utilities would have to either shut down coal-fi red power plants or retrofi t them with carbon capture technology by 2030. It also will set parameters for converting coal-fi red boilers to natural gas and develop performance standards that require new natural gas-fi red plants to be built using “effi cient technology.”
