US coal-fired plant to test co-firing biomass

US utility Salt River Project (SRP) will test co-firing forest debris biomass at its 800MW Coronado coal-fired power plant in Arizona. The plant will co-fire 2,600t of local forest biomass with coal over a 20-day period to explore the feasibility of using forest debris as a supplemental fuel, SRP said. The tests will be carried out in the autumn or early winter, and will not require any modifications at the plant. The tests will be the first time that forest debris is co-fired with coal in Arizona, SRP said.
