The EU has approved the UK government’s planned contract-for-difference(CfD)renewable subsidy scheme.But biomass projects aiming to take advantage of the subsidies from next year are still waiting for individual state aid clearance. “The UK Contracts for Difference encourage all renew-able energy technologies producing electricity to compete against each other for support beyond 2016.It is a fine example of how to promote the decarbonisation of the economy with market-based support mechanisms,”said Joaquin Almunia,the commission’s vice-president in charge of competition policy.
