Simec Uskmouth Power (SUP) — the new owner of the 363MW Uskmouth coal-fired plant in south Wales — has announced plans to co-fire biomass with coal at the unit, potentially granting it a new lease of life. The plant is currently capable of co-firing biomass with coal and “plans are under way for its conversion to full biomass”, SUP said. The plant originally disconnected from the grid in March last year, when running costs made it unprofitable under the EU's large combustion plant directive. At the time Uskmouth's operating life was close to its end. UK utility SSE, the plant's previous owner, said in December last year that former plant employees could possibly be re-hired.
