EU 2020 renewables goal on schedule: EEA

The EU is likely to meet a target to increase the quota of renewables in the energy mix to 20pc by 2020, even though individual nations may not fulfil their contributions to the overall goal, according to initial estimates released by the European Energy Agency (EEA). The share of renewables in gross final energy consumption reached 14.9pc in 2013, a rise of 0.8 percentage points compared with a year earlier. Heads of government had said renewables would contribute 13.7pc of total energy use by 2013 in their aggregated national action plans.
