Dong Energy targets biomass growth

Danish firm Dong Energy is targeting biomass growth amid yearly earnings increases of 9pc last year, mainly driven by strong growth at its wind power division. Biomass-fired plants accounted for 28pc of its thermal and heat generation at the end of last year. And that is set to increase further, with the company targeting a 50pc share in its thermal power sector, by the end of 2020. Dong is poised to take a step closer to its thermal and heat generation from biomass target in 2016. The company plans to convert the coal-fired unit 3 at its 715MW Strudstrup combined heat and power (CHP), by the fourth quarter of next year. The Studstrup conversion will consume 700,000 t/yr of wood pellets.
